Cllr Mervyn Scutter
Responding today to a decision by Norfolk County Council's Cabinet to press ahead with plans to dramatically change the provision of services for children with special educational needs, Cllr Mervyn Scutter, Lib Dem spokesperson for Children's Services at Norfolk County Council, said:
"I am broadly supportive of what the administration is trying to do and support realigning the places for Special Educational Needs provision to where the children are. Children spending hours a day in travelling is not good for anyone. That said the new provision has to be of the right kind for the children and in sufficient numbers. We do not want to see children with special educational needs put into the main stream just because there are not enough places for them in specialist provision. I am for inclusion but for the right children. We need to redistribute some of the places in the central area but must preserve the excellence and specialisms which exist. This is recognised as regards the Clare School but also needs to be considered for other schools such as Parkside."
