Incineration Still Not Right For Norfolk's Waste

September 4, 2009 12:00 AM

Tim EastThe incineration of waste in Norfolk should not be an option according to the Liberal Democrats at County Hall. A recent news release by the County Council has highlighted the short listed bidders for the proposed PFI waste treatment facility at Kings Lynn. Once again the Conservative administration at County Hall is considering using incineration despite the public outcry that occurred when this method was put forward in Costessey.

Tim East, Liberal Democrat Spokesman for Planning, Transport, Environment & Waste affirmed the party's opposition to any future plans for incineration, "After the debacle of Contract A, with the choice of WRG's EfW Incineration technology at Costessey as the preferred bidder, I hope we don't make the same mistake again and plump for Incineration as the best technology available for Contract B. If we do it will inevitably cause delay and vociferous objections from the public.

At this stage the County Council is only considering the financial status of the bidders, their technical experience and the legal considerations in this short-listing for the PFI waste treatment facility in the Kings Lynn area. My hope is that when they come to examine the environmental implications of Incineration in the future it will not be the first choice."
